If you are planning a trip to Goa and do not know where to begin, this Goan guide will help you plan your journey.

Best time to visit Goa

The best time to visit Goa is between November and February. The weather remains pleasant during these months, and tourists get to witness more than just beaches. Other than the peak season, people also visit Goa during October and March to May. In October, beaches reopen and the landscape remains beautiful. During March to May, the temperature rises, but early mornings and evenings remain manageable.

A trip to Goa cannot be imagined without beaches. Whether you are visiting the beach for water sports, beach parties, or getting a tan, every beach will spellbind you with its own uniqueness, be it the serene and clean Sinquerim Beach or Calangute, the Queen of Beaches. The beauty will leave you speechless. But do not limit yourself to the beaches of North Goa, as the beaches in extreme South Goa, Butterfly and Agonda, and other beaches are equally beautiful.

Dudhsagar Falls

Dudhsagar waterfall

The waterfall that lies on the border of Karnataka and Goa is a place filled with breathtaking sights. After completing your journey to this place, people continue the journey in forest jeeps. The forest part covers a track filled with views of shimmering water and rough terrain. After reaching the common area with jeeps, the trek left is of 1 to 2 km. Once you complete the trek, you are left with a beautiful sight worth the wait.

Folklore related to Dudhsagar

The site not only consists of a beautiful waterfall, but it also has a bridge on which trains pass. It is the very same bridge depicted in the movie Chennai Express. It is believed by the people living in Goa that every train passing that bridge must stop before crossing; otherwise, there are bad consequences.

While visiting Dudhsagar, we were told the story of a mother, and daughter. While the mother and daughter were on the train, the daughter was crying, and her mother jokingly said that if you are not going to stop crying, I will leave you on this bridge.

The guide told us that the water god residing in that place heard her conversation and somehow stopped the train from moving. It was when the mother left her daughter on the bridge that the train moved.

It is still believed that the daughter still resides in that waterfall in the form of a mermaid.

Spice garden

Spice garden

Another place to visit in Goa is the spice garden. The visit begins with a shower of blossoms and continues with the titillating tales of spices that not only tickle taste buds but also amazes us with infinite health benefits. From turmeric to cloves and javitri to Jamaican spice, the journey into the spice garden was exhilarating. But it is not just the spices that cover the tracks of the spice garden; the tales of urrak and feni complete this adventure. After the introduction of all spices, we were told about the 20-year-old tradition of pouring water on the spine after leaving the spice garden. Other than the free feni shots, this place offered amazing food recipes including kokam kanji, peri peri papad, and suji kheer.

Mangeshi Temple

Mangeshi Temple

A temple situated in the village associated with Lata Mangeshkar, the famous singer, the temple is dedicated to an incarnation of Lord Shiva. Different poojas are held in the temple, including Abhisheka, Laghu Rudra, and Maharudra. The path to the temple is filled with shops offering trinkets, cashew nuts, bags, and many other things.

Great Island

Great Island goa

The journey to Great Island begins from Coco Beach. It takes around an hour to reach Great Island for water sports. This island is not just surrounded by ferries and speed boats for water sports, but people enjoy spending their time fishing and swimming as well. The fun part was, of course, the water sports. From scuba diving to parasailing and bumper to banana rides, people enjoyed partaking in these sports. If you are not a fan of water sports, you can enjoy spending your leisure time fishing and swimming. Lying on the surface of the water may get you a tan, but it will surely refresh you.

Basilica of Bom Jesus

Saint Xavier church

Goa, as I said, is not all about beaches. This place is filled with churches, but among the many churches, Saint Francis Xavier Church stands out the most. The church is known for the 400-year-old body of Saint Xavier. What’s more miraculous is that the body is still not decomposed, and the hair and nails are said to be growing. Within every five years, the body is taken out, and worshippers line up to offer their prayers. Among the many places I have visited, Goa was the only place where I found small crosses on the roads and churches surrounding the places. People offer garlands on the crosses like any other temple. Remember churches also have a dress code; follow the dress code if you are visiting a church.

Coco Beach and dolphin trips

Another entertaining part of Goa adventures is dolphin trips. On these trips, people are taken for a boat ride to view Fort Aguada and dolphins. This one-hour ride is extremely entertaining, with people pointing out dolphins at every turn. But the sightings are not guaranteed; you may or may not be able to see dolphins on your trip.

Dona Paula

Dona paula lovers point in goa

A place near the sea cannot be imagined without a lovers’ point. Dona Paula, a place popular for its romantic legend of Dona Paula, who died for her lover, a fisherman, after her father forbade her marriage to him, is now a paradise for lovers—lovers who do not jump into the water but share cworshippersute moments together. The best time to visit this place is in the evening and not under the blazing sun. This lovers’ point offers a beautiful view of the sea, corals, and shimmering water. This is also the place where the movie Singham was shot.

Porvorim and Panjim for Carnival

Plan your trip in February, and you will witness another titillating part of Goa—a carnival that speaks volumes about the culture, traditions, tribes, food, and many other aspects of Goa. The carnival is arranged by the people of Goa every year, and they have a different theme. In 2026, the theme was Bollywood, “Pushpa, jhukega ni saala.” The carnival was not just filled with people dressed up in different Bollywood attires, but they also depicted popular food items, tribes, and professions with the help of floats and attire. This time, people were acquainted with the living forms of Tatya Bichu and Manjulika. So plan your trip in February and find yourself standing in the crowd with a masquerade mask covering your face, hooting for the people of Goa.

Lairai Pooja

As people from different cultures live in Goa, people celebrate almost all kinds of Indian festivals, but Lairai Pooja is one of the main poojas of Goan people. The pooja occurs in the month of May, and people worship Lairai Devi, one of the divine seven sisters. The pooja is performed by donds. The worshippers follow a strict vegetarian diet or fasting before the pooja. They are supposed to wear wet clothes while eating a strict vegetarian diet. In temples, they walk barefoot on burning coals. It is said that people who do not abide by the rules of the pooja get blisters on their feet. As a remedy, people place paste of mogra flowers on the blisters.

Summing Up!

When it comes to Goa, people only imagine beaches, bikinis, and feni. But Goa is much more than that. The place is surrounded by amazing tales that evoke your curiosity and make you yearn to learn more about the place, the people, and their culture. From pooja to nightlife, Goa is a place that has it all. It depends upon the people which side of Goa they want to view.

But there are no rules that state – you can enjoy only one. You can relish Goan culture and enjoy the nightlife altogether. So, if you plan any future trip to Goa, do share your experience in teteateteink.
